Earn extra credit at ODU’s Waste Audit

ODU’s Recycling Center sez:

Old Dominion University Students will don protective gloves and white hazmat suits to sort through every scrap of trash from the dumpsters at the Powhatan I and II residential buildings for the Recycling Department’s official waste audit during RecycleMania 2012.

The goal is to both create community awareness of the campus waste stream and to begin a comprehensive waste audit that will inform new strategies for campus waste reduction and recycling.

Student volunteers working in one-hour shifts will sort the waste and determine the total weight of each category and record the material type.

Stop by University Recycling Center, 1015 West 47th Street during the hours of 10am-2pm on Thursday, February 2nd.

Digging through garbage is a quintessential archaeological process. In fact we’ll be spending two weeks this semester reading about the work of William Rathje who has excavated landfills from Arizona to New York. Later in the semester I was already planning for everyone to keep track of their trash for an essay assignment. That this ODU event has just come up is quite fortuitous!

Students in my Intro classes who would like to earn extra credit on quizzes can participate in this activity. Show up at the Recycling Center at the time above, participate in the activity, and then write a one or two page description of your experiences.
